Back and ‘Wonder Woman’ news

November 19th, 2008, 8:44 pm by Shawn Munguia

I’ll start this blog by apologizing form my long absence. With recent personnel changes I found myself somewhat overwhelmed, but I’m back now and will make sure that I have something to post regularly.

I’ll start now with word of the Amazon Princess getting her own DVD treatment.

Recent reports had the street date for the flick as February but the date is actually March 3. There will be single and double disk versions as well as a Blue Ray version.

The film is produced by Bruce Timm who has become somewhat legendary for his ability to bring DC characters to life in an animated format.

The extras are pretty copious so the two-disk seems the way to go in my book. Keep your eyes peeled and a space open in your video library. The Web site for the film is www.wonderwomanmovie.com and there’s a trailer there as well. Check it out then come back and tell me what you think.

Bill Melendez dies at 91

September 3rd, 2008, 8:16 pm by Shawn Munguia

To me, Christmas just isn’t Christmas until Linus van Pelt steps forward and asks for the spotlight. Then he recites the shepherds meeting of the angel and the announcement of the birth of a child, ‘Tis Christ the Lord.”

When Linus calls for the lights, the world will remain a little more dim this year. Bill Melendes, the cartoonist that breathed life in to Charles Schulz creations died Tuesday of natural causes. He was 91.

While his death will be mourned, his life was really an amazing celebration of animation. Melendez spent nearly 70 years in animation starting when he was hired by Disney in 1938. He participated in the strike to unionize Disney workers. He worked with Warner Brothers after that until 1948 when he left the company.

When he and Schulz met, they became fast friends and Schulz authorized Melendez, and only Melendez, to animate the Peanuts characters. In 1964 CBS contracted with Schulz to created a Christmas special. The network was reportedly worried about the many demands that Schulz made including using children to voice the character, the anti-commercialism theme, lack of a laugh track, a jazz score and the overt religious message.

Melendez and his business partner Lee Mendelson produced, directed or animated all the Peanuts specials and animations.

The world of animation will miss Bill Melendez, but the specials he helped to create will play on for years to come.

Comic candidates

July 30th, 2008, 9:44 am by Shawn Munguia

IDW Publishing, best known from owning the current licence for Transformers comics as well as running Trek comics, will delve into politics with an October release.

Currently scheduled for an October 8 release, are a pair of biographical comics on John McCain and Barack Obama. IDW is well known for not carrying super-hero titles and these books will be no different. The books are reported to focus on the facts of the candidates lives and will feature covers by J. Scott Campbell.

For those of you hoping for Campbell’s covers to be as babe-heavy as his Gen13 and Danger Girl covers, no such luck … Unless you’re into politico sex-appeal I guess.

Likewise, if you’re looking for an ultimate showdown between Obama and McCain, well, you’ll just have to wait for November.

This is an under appreciated X book in the Marvel Comics pantheon. The characters are fun and intrigueing and the art is beautiful. The addition of the character Ink, who gains powers by having tattoos applied, is fantastic. There’s a subplot that really pays off in this issue and many old fan favorites are back. Definitely worth a look.

Ultimate Origins #2 (preview)

July 8th, 2008, 11:51 am by Shawn Munguia

This is basically Marvel Comics‘ Ultimate Captain America origin story and it’s almost identical to the mainstream caps story. There are a few minor changes but for the most part it’s the story we almost all know. Still, the story is well told and those little differences are fun little geek moments. Theres’ also something about a post with a red eye thingy, akin to HAL from “2001” that will likely feature heavily in the  overall story. The book is well worth a read.

Powers #29 (preview)

July 8th, 2008, 11:45 am by Shawn Munguia

The only problem with Marvel Comics’ Powers is that you don’t really get a recap. Brian Michael Bendis pet project is sans recap page so it’s almost a conciet that you know what the heck is going on. Still, you usually get enough of what’s been happening to keep you up to date. This is a rare instance where that is not the case however. Much of the story was lost on me as I’ve not been able to keep up to date on the story for a while. I admire the writing greatly, but spent too much time playing catchup. If you’re a fan, you’ll love it, if you arent’ a fan, you’ll love it too, but wonder what you’ve missed out on so far.

Nova #15 (preview)

July 8th, 2008, 11:39 am by Shawn Munguia

I’ve never been a fan of the human rocket, but with each issue of Marvel Comics‘ Nova that I read I’m more and more hooked. They’ve managed to make him a galaxy spanning hero without making him too powerful. And the book is a lot of fun. This issue has him facing a terror that has a parasitic relationship with the world devourer Galactus. The creature has escaped both Galactus and the Silver Surfer’s notice so it does a good job of showing that the universe needs heroes with hearts mightier than their power set as either of those guys easily outclass Nova power wise. But the character is becoming a class unto himself.

Marvel Comics had a hit earlier this summer with the Iron Man movie and the hits just keep on rolling in with the Shell-head with Invincible Iron Man. Matt Fraction continues to enthrall with this tale of Tony Stark as he faces a 21st Century foe in Zebidiah Stane. The offspring of Starks greatest foe looks to make Starks life than any Stane every has, this issue reveals a big slice of creepy to the dude as well.

Guardians of the Galaxy #3 (preview)

July 8th, 2008, 11:22 am by Shawn Munguia

Marvel Comics’ Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the best written books on the market right now. Funny and yet full of adventure. This is a comic that has a raccoon as a contributing member and a stick as comic relief. And yet the action is paced quickly and fights are told well enough that you can follow the action in two different fights without getting lost. The art is stunning and THEY HAVE A TALKING RACCOON NAMED “ROCKET RACCOON AS THEIR WEAPON EXPERT. How can you not like it. Check out this preview, then get a copy.

GeNext #3 (preview)

July 8th, 2008, 11:14 am by Shawn Munguia

This Marvel Comics book is starting to be a really fun read and with the disappearance of a lead character it looks like it’s really about to start going. This is a great jumping on point, you might feel a little out of the loop, but it’s easy enough to catch up.
