I was lucky enough to see the pilot of ‘Heroes’ before the show hit the airwaves last fall. I didn’t know what I would make of the show but once I saw it I was really excited. It was fun, had a solid comic book style story to tell and one of the biggest flags in my book, it had the name Jeph Loeb among it’s credits.
Loeb has been in the comic book industry for years and has yet to write a storyline that I haven’t enjoyed. He is a great storyteller and is always willing to take a chance with familiar characters.
With such strong ties to the comic book world there was never any real doubt that the show, that turned out to be a freshman phenom, would have a presence on comic book shelves. But the fact that they took the comic storytelling in the direction that they did was a thrill and surprise.
Each week a new five to six page comic showed up on the internet. The stories filled in some of the gaps that were left on the show. While the show’s story didn’t necessarily need those gaps filled, the stories told in them are lots of fun and provide a wealth of insight into the characters on the show.
DC has compiled the stories into a hardcover collection that goes for $29.99.
The stories contain work by some of the best writers and artists at DC Comics and an interview by Loeb of a pair of the series writers, Aron Eli Coleite and Joe Pokaski.
Masi Oka provides a foreward put another great addition is the covers by Jim Lee and Alex Ross. Really beautiful work which is to be expected from these pillars of the comic-book art community.
Well worth the cost for anyone that was a fan of the show. And if you aren’t a fan, this book just may win you over. Either way, it‘s a fun read, check it out.
