The characters are fun and intrigueing and the art is beautiful. The addition of the character Ink, who gains powers by having tattoos applied, is fantastic. There’s a subplot that really pays off in this issue and many old fan favorites are back. Definitely worth a look.
Ultimate Origins #2 (preview)July 8th, 2008, 11:51 am by Shawn MunguiaThis is basically Marvel Comics‘ Ultimate Captain America origin story and it’s almost identical to the mainstream caps story. There are a few minor changes but for the most part it’s the story we almost all know. Still, the story is well told and those little differences are fun little geek moments. Theres’ also something about a post with a red eye thingy, akin to HAL from “2001” that will likely feature heavily in the overall story. The book is well worth a read.
Powers #29 (preview)July 8th, 2008, 11:45 am by Shawn MunguiaThe only problem with Marvel Comics’ Powers is that you don’t really get a recap. Brian Michael Bendis pet project is sans recap page so it’s almost a conciet that you know what the heck is going on. Still, you usually get enough of what’s been happening to keep you up to date. This is a rare instance where that is not the case however. Much of the story was lost on me as I’ve not been able to keep up to date on the story for a while. I admire the writing greatly, but spent too much time playing catchup. If you’re a fan, you’ll love it, if you arent’ a fan, you’ll love it too, but wonder what you’ve missed out on so far.
Nova #15 (preview)July 8th, 2008, 11:39 am by Shawn MunguiaI’ve never been a fan of the human rocket, but with each issue of Marvel Comics‘ Nova that I read I’m more and more hooked. They’ve managed to make him a galaxy spanning hero without making him too powerful. And the book is a lot of fun. This issue has him facing a terror that has a parasitic relationship with the world devourer Galactus. The creature has escaped both Galactus and the Silver Surfer’s notice so it does a good job of showing that the universe needs heroes with hearts mightier than their power set as either of those guys easily outclass Nova power wise. But the character is becoming a class unto himself.
Guardians of the Galaxy #3 (preview)July 8th, 2008, 11:22 am by Shawn MunguiaMarvel Comics’ Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the best written books on the market right now. Funny and yet full of adventure. This is a comic that has a raccoon as a contributing member and a stick as comic relief. And yet the action is paced quickly and fights are told well enough that you can follow the action in two different fights without getting lost. The art is stunning and THEY HAVE A TALKING RACCOON NAMED “ROCKET RACCOON AS THEIR WEAPON EXPERT. How can you not like it. Check out this preview, then get a copy.
GeNext #3 (preview)July 8th, 2008, 11:14 am by Shawn MunguiaThis Marvel Comics book is starting to be a really fun read and with the disappearance of a lead character it looks like it’s really about to start going. This is a great jumping on point, you might feel a little out of the loop, but it’s easy enough to catch up.
Eternals #2 (preview)July 8th, 2008, 11:04 am by Shawn MunguiaThis Marvel comic is kind of like watching “I Claudius” with super powered players. You know they have super powers because Tony Stark whines about them not being under his thumb and you’re expected to know some Marvel history. They don’t’ actually show any fighting, powers or much else besides complain to one another or whine because the Celestial is talking to someone else … I guess that part is pretty Saved by the Bell actually. Still, everything looks really beautiful and they promise that it’ll all lead somewhere so this’ll probably mean something sometime down the line.
Captain Britain and MI13 #3 (preview)July 8th, 2008, 10:59 am by Shawn MunguiaThis issue of Marvel Comics’ Captain Britain and MI:13 finds England and all of magic under attack by the Skrull. From issue 1 this book has been non-stop action and it doesn’t let up in issue 3. Add to that, Spitfire is an alien butt kicker of epic proportions. Really a fun read.
Amazing Spider-Girl #22 (preview)July 8th, 2008, 10:52 am by Shawn MunguiaThis Marvel Comics book has been a fun read since I first started reading it. The comic tells stories of May “Mayday” Parker who has taken on her father’s mantle after Pete retired from the hero biz. The title takes place in the same alternate future where the American Dream operates and rarely fails to be at least a fun read.
Wolverine #66 (preview)June 16th, 2008, 9:06 pm by Shawn MunguiaThe line that many have used to sell this Marvel Comics tale is “like Unforgiven starring Wolverine.” All the heroes have fallen and Wolvie is about the only one left alive. Hulk’s hick descendants, pretty much, run a big chunk of the country and Wolvie is in hock to them. So he sets off on a cross country job with the now blind Hawkeye to try and earn the money to save his pig farm. You read that right, “his pig farm.”
