The line that many have used to sell this Marvel Comics tale is “like Unforgiven starring Wolverine.” All the heroes have fallen and Wolvie is about the only one left alive. Hulk’s hick descendants, pretty much, run a big chunk of the country and Wolvie is in hock to them. So he sets off on a cross country job with the now blind Hawkeye to try and earn the money to save his pig farm. You read that right, “his pig farm.”

It’s not one of the greatest Wolvie tales ever told, but it’s worth the price of admission. This book finds Logan on the trail of fox hunters in Louisiana, except that the leader of the expedition has other plans. Ultimate Origins #1 previewJune 2nd, 2008, 5:07 pm by Shawn MunguiaX-Force #4 previewMay 26th, 2008, 9:09 pm by Shawn MunguiaWhen Marvel Comics Cyclops decided to create a force to act as a more aggressive branch of the X-Men, Wolvie was tapped to lead. The fast paced storytelling continues here as the story comes to a head. Wolverine: First Class #3 previewMay 26th, 2008, 9:07 pm by Shawn MunguiaMarvel Comics continues the look back in to the early days of the Wolverine/Kitty team-up. The series is an attempt to show how the gruff wild-man came to be a father figure to one of mutant-dom’s brightest stars. Ultimate X-Men #94 previewMay 19th, 2008, 7:26 pm by Shawn MunguiaUltimate X-Men #94 is probably my must read for the week. While Marvel Comics is putting out some solid comics and I’m a huge fan of Hercules, this issue has some truly jaw-dropping moments. Among the “What the hell?” moments is the unveiling of Ultimate Alpha Flight. But take a look at the roster and you’ll have a nice little gasp in there as well. Wolverine #65 previewMay 10th, 2008, 5:17 pm by Shawn MunguiaIssue #65 is the conclusion of the “Get Mystique” storyline in Marvel Comics‘ Wolverine. For those who’ve been waiting for a knock-down-drag-out between Wolvie and a neekid Mystique, this’ll fit the bill. Wolverine #64 previewApril 8th, 2008, 8:54 am by Shawn MunguiaWolverine #64 is the second to last issue, from Marvel Comics, focusing on Wolvie hunting down Mystique to get revenge for her betrayal of the X-Men. There are a couple of good plot points in the book but it doesn’t have a whole lot of substance to it. What is there is really solid work, but where the last issue felt like the passage of a few hours, this felt like maybe 15 min. passed from word one to the end. Again we’re just given a glimpse of the big baddie in present time before rushing off into the flashback. Not a bad way of telling a story, but there isn’t a whole lot making us care about the current danger yet. The danger of the past has some nice reveals and some of the imagery is downright creepy though. That said, I will repeat my earlier sentiment, I’ll read the next chapter the moment it’s in my hands. Also, the series is being put out, as a variant, entirely in black and white. The first issue I think needed the color a little more than this one. Issue 2, I like the black and white edition more. Grab that if you can get it. Logan #2April 1st, 2008, 9:20 am by Shawn Munguia“Logan” issue No. 2 of the limited series from Marvel Comics is penned Brian K. Vaughn and penciled Eduardo Risso. Issue No. 1 was pretty amazing, does issue No. 2 live up to its predecessor? Read the review Wednesday. |
